Wellsboro, Pa. (18 NEWS) — Governor Tom Wolf’s budget address was what some politicians are calling “aggressive”. With the hope of increasing state education funding, Wolf is calling for an overhaul of many taxes. Including an increase in sales tax from 6% to 6.6%, and an income tax increase from 3% to 3.7%. That’s something one state representative says is counter-productive.
“Really probably 65 percent of the jobs of the jobs are created by small businesses. If we hand so many taxes that they can’t meet a payroll, they can’t pay their expenses, and they can’t keep their doors open, we’ve lost more jobs than we’d ever created by the other things,” Tina Pickett.
Party leadership says that Wolf’s proposed budget increases spending by 16% but still needs to be passed by the Republican-controlled legislature.
