Local store owner gives back to veterans

Local News
Coming from a whole family of veterans and being one himself, Mark Phifer has always had a special place in his heart for those who serve. Earlier this year, he opened the Valley Heroes Shop in Waverly.

Phifer says, “To hear the stories, how proud they are that their granddaughter, grandson, just joined the navy the army…it’s amazing to see the smiles and the excitement even though they know there’s the fear…there so proud.”

Phifer says he too is proud of the members of our armed forces. Not only for their service to our country, but also for the service they provide their communities even after they take the uniforms off.

He says, “Tens of thousands of dollars that are raised every year by our veterans to help our community through our food banks, coat drive, through drug awareness, and that’s what this store is about. We were able to help support them and donate and this year we’ve given thousands of dollars from the profits of this to these organizations to help boost their capability of helping the community.”

He says our community wouldn’t be what it is without the help of local veterans and that’s why he feels it’s so important to give back to them.

“And that’s what it’s about…community, being one, working together.”

Phifer reminds us all this coming Veterans Day that even if you don’t have the money to help support local veterans organizations, there is one simple gesture we can all do to show our thanks.

He says, “The best gift you can get any veteran, you can walk into any restaurant any place and find a veteran. when you see someone that’s wearing a proud veterans hat, coat, or showing it, reach out your hand and shake it just say thank you because not only will they feel good about it you will too.”
