More students this year passed New York’s English and Math assessment exams but more students also opted out from taking them.
In the English Language Arts Test, the percentage of students in grades three through eight who scored at the proficient level rose over six percent to 37.9% from 31.3% last year.
In the Math Test the percentage of students that were proficient rose just one percentage point from 38.1% to 39.1%.
The percentage of kids who didn’t take the exams rose from 20% last year to 22% this year.
