Motorist leads police on chase spanning two states

A high-speed chase across state lines ended with a crashed vehicle and officers taking a swim. The chase started in New York and ended over the state border in Pennsylvania.

Just before 5 p.m., Tuesday evening, a motorist led police on a chase starting near River Road in Waverly before heading south past the state line into Pennsylvania. 

The male driver sped south past Sayre and into Athens Township with multiple law enforcement agencies trailing behind.

The driver made a right-hand turn from after crossing the Front Street Bridge, onto Sheshequin Road, heading south.

The suspect hit a stone embankment, rear-bumper dangling off, and proceeded to flee the scene of the crash on foot, Attempting to use the Susquehanna River to escape the police.

The Athens Fire Department was called in to find the suspect by boat. Shortly after, authorities apprehended the suspect in the river.

The chase came to an end leaving police soaked from fishing the suspect out of water.
