New Organ Donor Law In New York State

There’s a new law here in New York State that you’ll need to pay close attention to when you renew your driver’s license or non-driver ID.

Applicants must now choose whether they would like to become a registered organ, eye and tissue donor on the New York State Donate Life Registry. You will no longer be able to leave the organ donor box un-checked.
Governor Cuomo and Assemblyman Phil Palmesano say this new law will help save thousands of lives.

“We have 10,000 New Yorkers waiting for an organ donation right now. 1,500 people have been waiting over five years. One person who donates or becomes an organ donor at the time of their death can save up to 8 lives and impact 50 others,” Palmesano said.

This law is aimed to help fulfill the purpose of Lauren’s Law.
