CAMPBELL, N.Y. (WETM-18) – The woman who pleaded guilty to involvement with an underage drinking party that ended in a teenager’s death will serve probation. Kelly Campbell of Painted Post was sentenced Monday night.

After the October 2013 party, police say Will Warrick, 16, wandered drunk onto Interstate 86 and was hit and killed by a tractor trailer. Monday, his grandparents said Campbell should have stopped the party.

Police say Campbell, 34, went to the party with her daughter and gave alcohol to some of the teenagers there. She was the only adult at the party at a home on Victory Highway, which was hosted by a high schooler who was also charged.

Campbell pleaded guilty to endangering the welfare of a child. She will serve three years probation, 200 hours of community service and pay a $1000 fine. Will Warrick’s family says that’s not enough. At Campbell’s sentencing tonight, one wore a shirt in his memory and his grandmother asked the judge for a harsher penalty.

”I mean, he was doing what other teenagers were doing,” said Tammy McKillip of her grandson, who she described as “into some mischief, but a good kid.” “But you know what? That’s where when you’re an adult, that’s when you step up and you say, ‘you’re a kid, no.’ Call the cops, call anybody, call their parents.”

Campbell declined to comment, but her son said he was at the party too.

”She came to that party to get us kids,” said Jonathan Walmsley, Jr., Campbell’s son. “And I feel it’s just not fair, people look at my mom wrong. “She wasn’t responsible for any of Will’s actions.”

Warrick’s grandmother says she will ask state lawmakers to introduce stronger penalties for adults involved with underage drinking that leads to death.
