The 35th annual Wineglass Marathon is taking place on Sunday.
Thousands of runners from across the globe are participating, but the race has grabbed the attention of one particular international group.
Their group name is Run For Your Heart and they’re from Aruba. The group was founded five years ago by Cardiologist Dr. Johnny Cheng.
They arrived earlier this week and have been staying at La Tourelle in Ithaca.
Runners from other areas are still trickling in, and many of them stopped at the Corning Museum of Glass at the marathon’s Health and Fitness Expo to pick up their bibs and other materials.
The race director explains why she thinks the Aruba group became interested in the race.
“We’re a great Boston qualifier,” Sheila Sutton, the Wineglass Marathon Race Director said. “(It’s a) nice flat scenic course. There’s a lot to do: the wineries, the shopping, the museums. They can make it a whole week vacation.”
One of the Aruba runners confirms the main reason the race attracted them.
“We got inspired by the name ‘Wineglass,'” Esmeralda Hendriks said. “So, we were hoping that after racing we could enjoy some wine at the wineries. It turned out to be a big reason for us to come, but we also figured out it was on the list of the 10 most wanted marathons because of its flat course and the possibility to qualify for Boston as well as personal best.”
Roughly 7,000 runners are expected to participate this weekend. If you add family and friends, an estimated 20,000 attendees are anticipated to be in the area.
