Spectacular Summer: Finger Lakes National Forest

Just off the Seneca Lake Wine Trail, more than 30 miles of a very different kind of trail awaits. 18 News Reporter Samantha Lantz has more from the National Forest in Hector.

“So we’re here on the Finger Lakes National Forest and this is the ravine trail, it’s a trail that goes along with deep ravines as you can see here, kind of following a really unique ecological feature which is these Hemlock gorges that we have so it’s a unique trail that does kind of a nice 10 or 15 minute loop back to the trail head. And this is the only National Forest in New York State so that’s really kind of a unique thing. People think of State Parks and there’s a lot of those around but this is actually the only National Forest in New York State,” Natural Resource Specialist Tim Noon said.

Our own hidden gem tucked away just minutes from Seneca Lake.

“We’ve got three great campgrounds, a group campground, one specifically for horse users, we’ve got the blueberry patch campground, as well as for tents and what not and then you can also camp pretty much anywhere on the National Forest we call it dispersed camping. With that, we have several ponds that are stocked with fish and those big grasslands that I mentioned are a great spot to view wildlife or for having a really long scenic view across the Finger Lakes and things like that. Really you can spend the day up here doing different things,” Noon said.

With no gates or closing times, the National Forest is free and open to the public 24/7, 365 days a year.

“I’m always partial to the fall just for the colors, there’s a lot of chances with the open nature of the National Forest here for some good views of color. Having said that, it’s pretty quiet here in the winter so it’s a good time to do some cross country skiing, and then spring and summer this place is kind of in full swing,” Noon said.
