The saga continues in the longstanding lawsuit between County ExecutiveChris Moss and the Chemung County legislature.
In a 14 to 1 decision, the Chemung County Legislature decided to override County Executive Moss’ veto.
On Monday night, the legislature moved to amend the charter. The charter explains how the legislature has had a separate council since 1983. Legislators tell us it would have been easier to amend it years ago, however, there was never any controversy surrounding it until now. The ongoing controversy is something the legislative branch would like to put in their rearview mirror.
“We just want to move past this and just get down to the work that we were elected to do,” said legislator Christina Sonsire.”The problems going on in Chemung County; drug use, crime, those problems are real and they demand our attention. So the extent to which we can kind of move past this distraction, which is what I consider it, the faster we can move on, the better.”
The charter is written with a permissive referendum, meaning Executive Moss could move to have this item concerning appointed attorneys put on the ballot in November.
