Thousands crowded Wisner Park in Elmira on Saturday to celebrate the “The Hope of Christmas.” But it wasn’t your typical Christmas event.
Instead, it was all free. And there more action going which reminded those who attended why the holiday exists.
More than 30 area churches and hundreds of volunteers came together to organize the event.
“This event is a little different than what you normally see,” says Herb Green, a volunteer and co-organizer of the event.
“Everything here is free, we believe that Jesus Christ was given to us, free, in the manger. That’s what Christmas is all about. We do this just to come out, to give everybody a free gift, just as Christ was given to us free.”
Although, there was still plenty to do which is reminiscent of many things Christmas. People enjoyed a live stage show, giveaways, pictures with with Santa, a chance to dunk the Grinch and even get a train ride from Buddy the Elf.
