Three correctional officers were treated at Arnot Ogden after several inmates attacked them at the Elmira Correctional Facility on Jan. 30, 2019 around 1:45 p.m.

An inmate prematurely left a classroom and was confronted by an officer. The inmate then spit on and punched the officer, who administered OC Spray to the inmate. A second officer assisted in securing the inmate outside of the classroom.

A second inmate in the classroom then became unruly and was ordered against the wall by a third officer. That inmate elbowed the officer several times in the chest before he could be restrained.

A third inmate struck another officer in the face before being brought under control, and a fourth inmate charged at an officer outside of the class before being sprayed with OC Spray.

Two officers were treated for bruises and abrasions and a third was treated for exposure to blood.

“Staff attacks continue to be one of the most troubling issues we deal with inside our correctional facilities, said Joe Miano, the NYSCOPBA Western Region Vice President.

“With changes in the disciplinary system, there is no real deterrent for inmates not to brazenly attack staff.  In 2018 attacks on staff once again reached record levels.  Our members will continue to be put in harm’s way unless there are significant repercussions for inmates who continue these unprovoked attacks.”
