A tractor trailer truck crashed into a railroad overpass bridge in Schuyler County Tuesday night.
It happened on Route 329 in the Town of Dix, about a mile and a half up from Franklin Street in Watkins Glen.
Traffic was diverted away from the crash scene while crews worked to remove the truck which was stuck under the bridge.
Officials also made efforts to stop trains from coming across the overpass bridge that goes over the state highway.
Schuyler County Legislator Phil Barnes says the truck had just left a salt company and was hauling a load of salt when the crash occurred.
Barnes says this has become an all too common problem in the last four or five years — trucks that are too tall heading toward and either crashing into the bridge or being forced to turn around.
“This is getting to be a several times a week occurrence where trucks are following their GPS units taking this way, ignoring the signs,” Barnes said. “The majority of them get stopped before they hit the bridge, unfortunately tonight this gentleman did hit the bridge.”
Barnes wants federal regulations requiring commercial vehicles to have commercial GPS units that would direct trucks away from roads they should not be on.
Barnes says there were no injuries in the crash and no damage to the bridge.
