High school and college students traveled from Philadelphia to New York State to compete in the 13th Annual Toyota Green Grand Prix at Watkins Glen International Friday.

The wintry weather did not stop students from spending the day racing fuel-efficient vehicles on the track.  The rain and snow didn’t hold spectators back either.

The purpose of this race is to promote sustainable transportation technology.  Students from Alfred State College is one of the groups who participated.

“Our students in particular are the wave of the future when it comes to automobiles and they’re really big on alternative fuels,” said Mike Ronan, a professor in the Automotive Department at Alfred State. 

For over a decade the Green Grand Prix has been putting a spotlight on educating young people on motoring technology that aims for a cleaner environment through engine and driving efficiencies.

The students and officials at Watkins Glen International will have a dinner to award the winner Friday night.

This weekend is opening weekend for the track.
