3 Youngsters Rescued From Chemung River in Elmira

Local News
Elmira firefighters late Friday afternoon rescued three youth stranded in the Chemung River in Elmira.
It happened shortly after 5:00 p.m.
Deputy Fire Chief James Sincock says the three youngsters were trying to swim across the river in the area of the Grove Street boat launch but they didn’t make it.
One of them indicated they got tired and the three ended up on a dead log next to a bridge abutment.
Firefighters put a boat in the river and got to them within minutes.
Sincock says one of the kids was a bit shockey from losing body heat but there were no serious injuries.
He says they are lucky to be alive.
Sincock said, “The water’s very cold. It’s not the time of year to be in the water especially in a river with moving water. There are a lot of hazards. The kids were in their street clothes. Try swimming in a pair of blue jeans and see how you make out.”
Sincock says none of the youngsters was wearing a life preserver.
