ELMIRA HEIGHTS, N.Y. – At St. Charles Church on Oakwood Avenue in Elmira heights, the group Relaxed Squares hosts square dances every Monday night from 7:00 p.m. till about 9:30 p.m.
There used to be three groups in the area, but Relaxed Squares has been the only one to stick around for the past 44 years.
Tonight’s event is called “hi neighbor nights” where everyone is welcome to come and learn the steps. New dancers are mixed in with club members to help with each step. Gary Pruyne is the caller for the dances.
Pruyne also said his advice for other dancers are to get used to many callers because each have their own way of calling the dance.
There are two forms of calls. The easier calls are called mainstream and the more advanced calls are called plus calls. Plus calls are a combination of two or more calls that are put in a sequence.
Rose Marie Lugg and Marcus Strange come to dance almost every Monday when they are not residing in Florida.
“Just the people are very friendly and very nice,” Rose Marie said, “it’s so much fun to move with the music and get a lot of exercise if it weren’t for the dances.”
