A Capital Region man’s family just grew a bit bigger after he successfully located his birth mother.
The story behind Jaymes White’s adoption has exposed a violent and dark beginning. Growing up in Saratoga Springs, Jaymes always felt the love of his family and parents. He says he had no idea that he and his younger sister were adopted, until he was a teenager, when an uncle made an aside comment.
“We were like, ‘Mom and Dad, Uncle Bruce, we know he drinks sometimes– He told us we were adopted.’ It’s like, can you believe that?”
But, the story was true. His parents shared information they had from the Nebraska Children’s Home Society which handled Jaymes’s adoption. They shared photos of his birth parents as well as the fact that his biological mother had been just 13 when she’d given birth.
Then they shared the shocking truth behind his conception.
“She was sexually assaulted. It’s uncomfortable to talk about. But at the end of the day that’s still part of my story,” said Jaymes.
Jaymes, who’s now a school counselor for young people with special needs, says the death of his high school football coach and the birth of his son got him thinking again about who he came from.
With his adoptive parents’ blessing, he began his search, first, by posting the old photos of his birth parents on Facebook.
“People started sharing, and the love and support has been overwhelming,” Jaymes said.
But, the biggest breakthrough came from the adoption agency, who forwarded a letter from his mother.
“It says, ‘Dear Jaymes, I just want you to know that there wasn’t a day that went by that I didn’t think about you. And that I love you with all my heart.’”
Then, last week, came the the phone call he’s waited a lifetime for. He says the conversation with his birth mother, Beverly, lasted for two hours. He says he mostly wanted her to know one thing: “Just to know that she made the right decision. That I had a good life. That I have two awesome loving parents and now I have a mom and a sister and on the other side I have a half-brother so it’s just been an unbelievable experience.”
