Open enrollment for health insurance through NY State of Health, the state’s Affordable Care Act marketplace, will begin in November, and AIM Independent Living Center’s free Navigator Program can help.
Open enrollment begins Nov. 1 for new enrollees with NY State of Health. For those who already have coverage through the marketplace and want to renew or change health plans, open enrollment begins Nov. 15.
AIM has a team of six navigators to help people compare health plans on the NY State of Health website, enroll in coverage, and receive help paying for their coverage under the Affordable Care Act.
Eligibility for subsidies is based on income and household size. Consumers may qualify for Medicaid or the low-cost Essential Plan, or get tax credits that lower monthly premiums for health plans from a variety of insurers.
The AIM Navigator Program covers Steuben, Chemung, Schuyler and Allegany counties, and has navigators at locations throughout the region. Evening and weekend appointments are available.
Open enrollment continues through Jan. 31. The earlier one enrolls, the earlier coverage begins. Dec. 15 is the last day to enroll in coverage that starts Jan. 1, 2017. For those who sign up between Dec. 16 and Jan. 15, coverage begins Feb. 1. Those who enroll from Jan. 16-31 will have coverage effective March 1.
AIM is a non-profit, and the Navigator Program is funded by a grant from the New York State Department of Health and has no ties to any insurance companies.
