Witnesses testified Wednesday in Chemung County Court after opening statements began on the second day of Lawrence Baker’s murder trial.
Baker is charged with murder for the Feb.13, 2016 shooting death of 24-year-old Najee Holmes.
A fight reportedly occurred at a home on Baty Street on the city’s southside shortly before the shooting.
The witnesses told the jury what they believed happened.
One witness claimed he saw a fight ensue between Baker and Holmes.
He said the fight happened so fast, the two men were both physically on the floor, rolling up on top of each other, and it looked like a fist fight.
He then saw Baker pull out a gun and shoot Holmes.
Other witnesses said they heard loud pops but was not sure what the sound was.
Some witnesses were police officers recalling their part in the case.
Baker is behind bars and says the shooting was in self-defense. He plead not guilty to the charges.
Court will resume Thursday at 9:00 a.m.
