Benefit for local woman suffering from rare disease

Local News

ELMIRA, N.Y. (WETM) – The Big Flats American Legion is hosting a benefit to raise money for a local woman battling a rare disease.

While leaving her job at Chemung Canal, 24-year-old Allison Balmer knew something wasn’t right. She was transported to Arnot Hospital where a CAT scan showed a brain bleed that would need immediate medical attention.

Allison was flown to Strong Memorial Hospital where she was diagnosed with Arteriovenous malformation (AVM), an abnormal formation of blood vessels where the arterial blood bypasses capillaries and reaches the veins. This condition is very rare and only occurs in 1 in 200,000 people.

Allison underwent two brain surgeries within the first 24 hours at Strong and is awaiting her third surgery on Tuesday, September 17.

Allison is currently stable and her vitals are perfect.

A GoFundMe has been established to help Allison and her family cover medical expenses. The campaign has raised over $3,500.

There will be a benefit held for Allison at the Big Flats American Legion on October 5 from 4:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m. There will be 50-50, basket raffles, a cake wheel, and door prizes. Tickets for the event are $10 for adults and 12 and under are free. Tickets are available at the door and includes food, music, draft beer, and door prizes.

Donations can also be made to “The Allison Balmer Fund” fund established at Chemung Canal to help with medical expenses, travel, bills, etc. Those interested in making a donation can visit Chemung Canal Trust Company or mail a check 1 Chemung Canal Plaza Elmira, NY 14902.
