The space once occupied by Cappy’s is now an empty lot full of memories.
Cappy’s, a staple in the Elmira community for more than 70 years, has finally been demolished.
The store was first opened in 1946.
Since then, they’ve always transformed to fit the changing community. However, its owner says, with changes in the way people shop, stores like Cappy’s have lost their place.
“I’m with you in your sorrow and I hope we can translate that feeling of mourning and loss into a new vision for this area and this plot of land that has held so many wonderful memories,” Cappy’s Owner, Joe Caparulo said.
Demolition began on Friday and was completed Monday afternoon.
In place of the store, Elmira plans to build a roundabout, as well as use the area for green space.
