A Cato man is facing 57 years to life in prison after a jury found him guilty of all counts surrounding claims of sexual abuse of multiple children over several years.
According to Cayuga County District Attorney Jon Budelmann, William Lewis repeatedly molested and sexually abused three children– the youngest was six years old.
Lewis admitted to abusing these children beginning in 2014 in Cayuga County and elsewhere. Some of the abuse happened at his mother’s house in the Town of Victory.
Following his arrest, faced with the reality of prison time, Lewis tried to back-track from his confession by pointing the finger at someone else, and blaming these three children, their mother, and the police, Budelmann said.
Budelmann issued the following statement:
“I commend these children for their bravery in confronting their abuser and ADA Heather De Stefano for her hard work in securing this defendant’s conviction at trial. The case was very difficult for all involved, heartbreaking. Having the defendant try to blame these three young victims for his own despicable acts is plain evil. This defendant demonstrated no concern for these children and displayed absolutely no empathy, either during the trial or at sentencing. His conviction should send a loud and clear message that those who sexually abuse children will be held accountable for their actions. We were pleased that the Court agreed with our assessment that stealing the childhood from three innocents deserved the maximum sentence.”
