The trial of the 19-year-old Elmira man accused of causing a deadly crash involving a motorcycle in Horseheads, killing two people, is now underway in Chemung County Court.
The first day of Caden Charnetski’s trial came to a close Wednesday afternoon after multiple witnesses, about three of them, recalled the specific details that lead up to the tragic crash last July. It was an emotional 7 hours of testimony, as vivid details of the deadly crash were relived through witness accounts and photos show in court by the prosecution.
Harolyn and Matthew Matteson’s lives were cut too short because of Charnetski’s decision to get behind the wheel after allegedly smoking marijuana, the prosecution said in a packed courtroom. The defense said it’s not merely a criminal case with marijuana, but a civil one where the laws of physics and factors of science play a larger role in the case.
The bench trial will resume Thursday at 9 a.m., stay with 18 News for LIVE coverage.
