Doctors Explain The Link Between Sleep Apnea And Heart Disease

Local News

“One of the most common symptoms that will occur is the patient will feel tired. They will have unrefreshing sleep. They will wake up frequently at nighttime,” Guthrie Cardiologist, Dr. Najeeb Rehman said.

Doctors at Guthrie say if you think you wake up frequently during the night to use the bathroom, you may actually be waking up for a different reason.

“During the day time, they may feel tired and fatigued and sleepy. If they’re watching television, reading, the newspaper they may easily fall asleep,” Dr. Rehman said.

It could be sleep apnea and it could be caused from abdominal obesity. The weight of your abdomen pushes your diaphragm into your chest and your lungs have less room to breathe.

“That leads to a drop in your oxygen saturation and that leads up to the brain to activate certain mechanisms in your body to compensate for decreased oxygen,” Dr. Rehman said.

That’s why sleep apnea patients were a mask to sleep: “A mask that goes onto the face of the patient and pushes the air at a higher pressure so they can increase the lung capacity and increase the oxygenation process,” Dr. Rehman said.
