Today our country commemorates Flag Day, and many of our neighbors and members of the Boy Scout Troop 3097 of Big Flats celebrated the day in a special way.

Joshua Samodal, an Eagle Scout Candidate with Troop 3097, led a year-long renovation project of the flagpole site at his current school, St. Mary Our Mother, in Horseheads. According to Samodal, the flagpole itself was rusted and weathered, and the site below was overgrown with shrubbery.

So, Samodal and his Troop worked to refurbish the flagpole and clean up the site for Samodal’s Eagle Scout project.

In honor of Flag Day, Samodal and his Troop replaced the tattered American flag with a brand new one, officially marking the completion of the project in front of school children, faculty, and other community members.

“The scout develops their own project and they lead it, fund it, they do everything that they can to make their project a reality. It’s definitely an honor to be serving our flag and serving everything that it represents,” said Samodal.

This year is also the 100th anniversary of the first official recognizing of Flag Day by the U.S. Government.
