Elmira city council approves grant request to restore historic Iszards building

Local News

Elmira is one step closer to seeing a new apartment complex come into the historic Iszard’s building.

On Monday night, the Elmira City Council approved a resolution approving and endorsing the Elmira Downtown Development, Inc.’s request for a $500,000 grant.

Back in April, 18 News announced Visum Development’s plans to renovate the historic building and make 33 market rate apartments. Now with the New York Main Street Program for Building Renovation Funding, that vision, just may become a reality, that adds to the current revitalization of downtown Elmira.

“It’s a great project and it’s really a part of the whole revitalization we have going,” said Jennifer Herrick. “It aligns very nicely with the 100 West Waters Apartments. It really is going to be that whole living working playing in downtown Elmira.”

The application will be sent in towards the end of July. The city expects to hear back about the grant mid- November, December. Should the application be approved, the new apartments could be complete by 2021.
