Gifts just aren’t for Christmas. The gift of reading can be given year round, and that’s exactly what one school district is doing for its students.

The Elmira City School District is one of  40 school districts nationwide to receive of the U.S. Department of Education Federal Grant worth $2.2 million.

So, what exactly does that mean? Well, over the next 3 years, the grant will be divvied up to ensure a very generous book giveaway that will hopefully outfit classrooms, school libraries home libraries for students.

This is all apart of the care, climb. aboard the reading express project, which is a multi-tiered program that supports literacy throughout school libraries, families and summer outreach programs.

This “giveaway” doesn’t stop here, at the end of the year each student will receive 10 books for the “Books in the Box” for summer reading program.

The giveaway will benefit students in grades K trhough 3.

As the saying goes, “a book is a gift you can open again and again.”
