Ernie Davis Academy students came out to “touch up” the legendary area athlete Joel Stephens mural on the wall of NYSAF.
It’s a brand new mural they began painting earlier last month as a project for their art class. Taught by art teacher Emily Solometo, Ernie Davis Academy 9th grade students are able to participate in a semester-long course called “Community Arts.”
“Today we’re just doing some touch-ups on our mural,” said Ernie Davis Academy student Olivia Campbell.
The class examines symbolism in art and murals as a method of community education, civic engagement, and aesthetics. Last year, students researched, created and designed a mural inspired by the spirit, character, and accomplishments of Ernie Davis, the school’s namesake.
And it’s important to the students of the community. The mural means a lot more.
“The importance is to honor people who did so much for our communtuy,” said Campbell.
But it wasn’t that easy to fix the mural, there were some parts that needed a bit more care. Nevertheless they got it fixed.
“It’s proven to be a challenge. But I think we’ll get through it pretty good,” said Campbell.
