A new shop held a soft opening on Gray Street in Downtown Elmira on Saturday. Nutmeg Upcycling Gallery is a new fine art shop that sells collaborative pieces.
Owner and photographer Rich LaVere said he and his family work together to create the pieces there. But LaVere said it hasn’t always been easy getting their work out on display for potential customers to see.
“We’ve had a hard time finding a market,” LaVere said. “The fine arts market or even the craft market is a little bit difficult. So you can do craft shows which are big investment in time. There’s some websites like Etsy that we can use but that’s hit or miss.
LaVere said when he learned of the vacancy on Grey Street, he had a good feeling about it.
“We just thought that when the space became available it seemed like the right time to try something new again,” he said. “We see big potential for growth in the city here. And certainly we think that the arts have the potential to be a big part of that growth and a big part of the resurgence in the city.”
Saturday was actually a soft opening, the grand opening will be on Nov. 1, just in time to start holiday shopping.
