First Arena Gets New Owner, Jackals Will Fold

Local News

The First Arena officially has a new owner.

The new owner will be Brian Barrettt who has ties to Simmons Rockwell and Chemung County Executive Tom Santulli describes him as “very driven.”

Barrett will be putting $3.5 million of his own money into the First Arena.

“He has a real knowledge of this facility and hockey, he has the financial ability through his own hard work to make this successful,” said Santulli.

The Chemung County Industrial Development Agency, who currently owns the arena, is confident Barrett will bring the Arena success but IDA Director Mike Krusen said there’s still a lot of work to do.

“This arena will not make money moving forward,” said Krusen. “He (Barrett) understands how difficult it will be to operate the arena moving forward.”

As for the Elmira Jackals, the team will play until the end of the year and afterwards the franchise is finished.

The new owner will decide what’s next for future seasons as finalization of the arena transaction is pending.
