GreenStar Food Co-op’s new West End store at 770 Cascadilla St. is on track to open early 2020, according to General Manager, Brandon Kane.

Expanding from its 10,000 sq. ft. building on Buffalo Street to its new 34,000 sq. ft. the location will consolidate GreenStar’s West End operations under one roof to deliver a better shopping experience to the community and increase efficiency.

Since breaking ground in November 2018, the larger of the two former Cornell Press warehouses has been leveled for a parking lot, walkways, and landscaping, and a new concrete floor will be poured in May.

GreenStar also reports that 100 percent of the electricity for the electric HVAC system to warm and cool the entire facility, lighting, computers, appliances, and electric vehicle charging stations at the store will be sourced from community solar farms.

“GreenStar continues to lead the way in demonstrating that a successful business can be run cooperatively and sustainably,” Kane said.

GreenStar Food Co-op owners have invested nearly $650,000 toward the $1.5 million capital campaign goal. Campaign funds will leverage low-interest lending and financing to complete the expansion project. The spring phase of the campaign launched this month.

“Our emphasis is on service and selection,” Kane said. “More space, accessible aisles, indoor and outdoor café seating, and more room for classes and events, including a teaching kitchen, are just some of the features customers will experience at the new store. We can also expand our product line to include more local, Fair Trade, and culturally diverse items that shoppers are looking for at GreenStar.”

GreenStar supports more than 270 local farms and vendors and employs more than 200 people among its West End, Collegetown, and DeWitt locations. With the expansion, GreenStar will add up to 40 jobs.

“Supporting your community-owned co-op is a truly local, socially responsible investment,” Kane said. “We need people to rally around this project and continue to invest in our cooperative growth.”
