ELMIRA, N.Y. (WETM) – The Elmira Police Department is investigating a shooting that happened shortly before 11 a.m. on the 1300 block of Grand Central Ave.
Witnesses told 18 News they heard multiple gunshots and had to cover their young children who were feet away from the shooting near the intersection with Norton Street. One woman said her 2-year-old son was outside with her she heard about five gunshots. She saw another woman across the street who laid down over her child.
According to police, witnesses stated that a person was walking south on Grand Central Ave. on the west side of the street when someone in a red vehicle pulled up and began to fire shots at the person on the sidewalk. The person walking began to run west through a vacant lot and shots continued to be fired at him before the vehicle fled the area.
Police say a shed and garage were both struck by bullets, but police say there is no indication that anyone was struck by gunfire.
