Horseheads hotel owner back in court over bad checks

Local News

The developer of a new hotel project in Horseheads is facing multiple charges after he wrote a bad check to contractors that were working on his hotel project totaling around $350,000.

Thomas Shen was indicted by a Chemung County grand jury last year on charges of second-degree larceny which is a felony and issuing a bad check which is a misdemeanor.

However, since then a motion has been filed for dismissal of the grand larceny charge. The judge presiding over the case told attorneys that he would have a ruling for them by the end of business today.

Shen’s lawyer has stated that Shen is fairly new to the country and struggles with the English language. He did have a translator present with him in court today.

The project, which is located close to the intersection of County Route 64 and Westinghouse Road in Horseheads, is on the books to be completed in January is supposedly going to be a Best Western Plus.

Shen’s next scheduled court appearance is July 22.
