A basketball tournament held at the Chemung County Family Fitness Center looks to raise about $3,500 for the family of Howard Jones. Jones is the man who died nearly two weeks after falling down a flight of stairs at an Elmira bar.
Jones fell the night of March 26 at Brady’s Pub on West Water St. in Elmira. He died at Strong Memorial Hospital in Rochester 13 days later.
The tournament on Saturday, which featured several teams playing 5-on-5 as well as a three-point contest, was held to raise money for Jones’ family to help with medical costs while remembering Jones.
“We want to do this to raise some money for the family, there’s been a lot of different stuff going on, there’s been a lot of things they’ve had to pay for, so it’s just to raise money for the family, make things a little bit easier on them. If we can make one less issue for them that helps out a lot. And then also just to get everybody together here, a lot of his friends, just to remember him,” said Tommy Webster, a friend of Jones and co-organizer of the event.
