Hurricane Florence escalates need for blood donations

Local News

Hurricane Florence is escalating the American Red Cross’ need for blood.

The American Red Cross in the Finger Lakes Chapter has seen over 120 drives that have been canceled.

That number equates to a shortage of about 4,000 units of blood, according Brian McConnell, the Finger Lakes Chapter’s president.

However, the problem doesn’t end there. McConnell said prior to Hurricane Florence, all collection agencies across the U.S. have found it difficult to encourage people to donate.

“I really want to extend our appreciation to our regular donors, our annual donors, the individuals who make the second and third donations annually, and encourage folks who haven’t to turn out and give it a try,” McConnell said.

He also said their biggest pool of support comes from their corporate partners and schools.

The American Red Cross encourages those who are looking to donate to use their blood donor smart phone application to find nearby blood drives.
