The IRS has issued a renewed consumer alert warning taxpayers that email and texting scams have surged a whopping 400 percent this year.
The IRS says 1,026 phishing and malware schemes were reported in Jan. – that’s an increase of 254 during the same month last year.
And so far in Feb., 363 incidents have been reported.
That’s compared to 201 incidents reported for the entire month of Feb. in 2015.
The scams are designed to trick taxpayers into thinking they’re official communications from the IRS or others in the tax industry.
