After 40 years of reporting news in the Twin Tiers, WETM-TV anchor Jeff Stone announced Tuesday he is retiring.

Stone will step down following his 11 p.m. newscast on election night, Nov. 8.

He has spent the last 35 years in a variety of positions at WETM. He started as a weekend news anchor in 1981 and since the late 1990s, he has been an anchor on the 6 and 11 p.m. weeknight newscasts.

Stone says he plans on staying in the Elmira area and is looking forward to having more time for family, travel and some rounds of golf.

During Tuesday night’s newscast, Stone thanked viewers for the privilege of bringing them the news during his career at the station.

“We have a great news team here so our viewers can be sure they’ll continue to get coverage they can count on,” Stone said.
