Police: No one intentionally targeted in Route 13 shooting

SEPT. 13 UPDATE (WETM) – The Schuyler County Sheriff’s Office and New York State Police are investigating a shooting that took place on Sunday, September 12 on Route 13 near Alpine Junction, but say it doesn’t appear anyone was intentionally targeted.

Around 10:15 a.m., a Schuyler County Sheriff’s Deputy and a State Trooper were parked in a business parking lot at the intersection of Route 13 and Route 224 in Cayuta. They heard a gunshot and then the impact of the bullet hitting a building behind them.

The incident is still under investigation, but police said it appears neither law enforcement nor the public were intentionally targeted.

The State Police are the primary investigating agency and further inquiries should be directed to them.

ALPINE JUNCTION, N.Y. (WETM) – UPDATE: 8:25 p.m.: 18 News reached back out to the Schuyler County Sheriff’s Department, but more information is still not being released at this time.


A large police presence consisting of New York State Police and Schuyler County Sheriff’s Deputies were seen alongside Route 13 near Alpine Junction.

A tip came in saying there were reports of someone shooting at vehicles in the area, but that information is unconfirmed at this time.

We have reached out to the Schuyler County Sheriffs Office, and no comment has been made about the incident.
