Syracuse Police say a 12-year-old boy has died after a shooting in the city Wednesday evening.
Police responded to the area of Park Street and John Street around 9:35 p.m. When they arrived, they learned that the child had been brought to St. Joseph’s Hospital by private vehicle.
He was then transferred to Upstate University Hospital to be treated for a gunshot wound to the abdomen. On Thursday morning, police confirmed the boy had died.
The 12-year-old has been identified as James Springer III, a sixth grader at Grant Middle School.
A woman in her 30s was also grazed by a bullet in the shooting but injury is not believed to be life threatening.
There were several additional calls to 911 reporting shots fired in the area of Park Street and E. Division Street.
Police first reported the child was 9 years old, but later updated our sister station in Syracuse, NewsChannel 9, confirming the boy was 12 years old.
Mayor Ben Walsh and Deputy Mayor Sharon Owens said they were in contact with Syracuse Police Chief Frank Fowler as soon as they learned of the shooting and met with him soon after.
“I am profoundly sad and extremely angry at this senseless act of gun violence,” Walsh said at a press conference on Thursday.
This is the second child killed from gun violence in Syracuse this week.
A crisis management team is being activated in the Syracuse City School District.
