Chemung County Legislator Donna Draxler announced she is retiring from the Legislature.
She’s represented the county’s 14th Legislative District since 1984.
Draxler said she now backs Michael S. Smith, a former Southport Town Board Member and Deputy Town Supervisor, as a replacement.
He announced his candidacy earlier today, saying his experience makes him qualified for the job.
“When there is a problem, there is only one way to solve it. You’ve got to go at it head on and determine the facts,” Smith said. “That was always very important to me and I want to know everything there is to know about it, so that we can try and find some bit that everybody can agree on.”
Smith now faces Democratic candidate Christa Heyward who is also running for the seat.
