The Chemung County Legislature approved plans to construct a new road in Horseheads on Monday night.

The new roadway will connect  Old Ithaca Road to New York State Route 13. Officials said the new road is completely paid for by both state and federal funding.

The connector road is intended to give truck traffic an alternative to driving through neighborhoods at night.

“We’re looking to take that truck traffic and get it directly to New York State Route 13,” Chemung County Public Works Commissioner Andrew Avery said. “So it doesn’t have to go through the neighborhoods in front of peoples houses, we can get it right over to the state route and it will make a lot of people happier and it’s better for our road system too.”

Avery said the county will start designing the new road and purchase the land early next year. Construction will likely begin in 2019.
