Looking to hire an auto technician? Good luck

Local News

What are some of the hardest jobs to fill in Western New York these days?  Automotive mechanics and technicians slots are going unfilled, forcing many employers to recruit and hire students right out of high school.

Take for example, a job listing for career automotive technicians, starting pay $45,000 to $60,000 a year, here in Buffalo. Whose posting was that?  The U.S. Postal Service.

Jake Schultz, the vehicle maintance manager at the William St. maintenance facility said they have to service old and new vehicles on a regular basis to keep delivering millions of letters and packages on time.

“When people think of the postal service they think of mail.  They never think that we have mechanics here. We’ve got over 1,200 vehicles here that we service, and they require a lot of repair.”

The Postal Service is among dozens of employers are searching intensely for automotive technicians and mechanics, including auto repair facilities, auto dealerships, the Niagara Frontier Transportation Authority, and school bus companies.

Where are many employers turning to fill their ever-growing job openings in auto maintenance and repair? Technical schools, community colleges, and high schools, such as Burgard High.

Judy Zoanetti, Automotive Teacher at Burgard, said employers regularly visit the school, recruiting and encouraging students to stay on track.

“Everybody makes it known to us that we need graduates, we need mechanics and they are very excited about talking to us, coming to see us, meeting the kids.”

Burgard senior Jose Torres’ dad is an auto mechanic, and Jose is going to Burgard to take the family business to the next level.

“Do something with cars for the rest of my life, whether it is working on them or fixing them up. That is what I want to do for life.”

In addition to good pay, automotive technicians jobs often have excellent benefits, and in the case of the U.S. Postal Service, successful candidates can also look forward to company-supplied uniforms, allowances for work shoes, and a pension plan.

If you are interested in one of those automotive technician jobs at the post office, you have to apply online. For information on the automotive jobs and how to apply, and here is a link to the USPS careers website.
