ELMIRA, N.Y. (WETM) – The Chemung County legislature met on Monday and a recent move by state lawmakers drew some comments.

Members of “mothers out front,” an environmental organization spoke out during public comments.

They are calling on the county to mandate a 5-cent charge on paper bag.
New York’s ban on plastic bags starts in march of 2020.

It includes a provision that allows counties and all cities to decide whether to charge 5 cents if a customer wants a paper bag at the check-out aisle.

Back in the spring the county executive said he would not recommend the fee,”mothers out front” are calling for the fee – to help preserve trees.

Governor Andrew Cuomo announced Monday that the state’s department of health plans to investigate companies producing vaping liquids.

Catholic Charities’ Samaritan center is preparing to host its 14th annual empty bowls luncheon.

The annual event raises awareness on the effects of world hunger.
