This morning, a woman is dead and a 21-year-old Corning man is behind bars. Justin Gause is Is facing charges after a fire sparked at a home in the Village of Riverside Tuesday morning. Authorities have not yet released the name of the woman killed during the blaze.

The Corning-Painted Post community came together on Tuesday night to pay tribute to Adam Burnside, a sixth-grade student who recently passed away. Family and friends remembered Adam as a talented and fun-loving boy. Calling hours will take place on Thursday, May 16 from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. at Carpenters Funeral home in Corning.

Legislation is currently on the table that would allow terminally ill patients the ability to choose when they die with the assistance of a physician. Supporters of the Medical Aid in Dying Act say individuals should have a choice in ending their own suffering, and be allowed to die peacefully and on their own terms. Opponents of assisted suicide say more money should be spent on palliative care and that suicide is a public health concern, and not something in which doctors should be participating. 

May 15 is National Police Memorial Day. In honor of police officers who have fallen in the line of duty, the Schuyler County Sheriff’s Office is holding its first annual Police Memorial Service on Wednesday at 11 a.m.. The event will take place at the Schuyler County Courthouse lawn, located on Franklin Street in Watkins Glen.
