a new tenant may be one step closer to purchasing the monastery on west church street, that’s been vacant for years.
town of elmira zoning board held a public hearing to discuss plans for the dominican monastery located in west elmira
the applicant, joe works, wants to use the building as a church for worship and bible study, and then a camp during the summer. those are two different uses which led to the big question during tonight’s hearing, what is the zoning code in terms of principle use? and better yet, will it be a disturbance to neighbors?
while members of the public were not shy about speaking up, it seemed as though evangelist works was able to answer majority of their questions.
meanwhile, the board worked to define what the principle use of space means in regards to the plans presented on the application and where they fall within the terms of the code.
so what are the next steps? well it will be referred to the planning board for a site plan review, and final steps will be determined from there.
