The Chemung County Sheriff’s Office warned the public of potential thefts.
After the holidays, packaging of some expensive gifts might be left on the curb for garbage pick up. The Sheriff’s Office reminded the community to be very careful with how that packaging is disposed.
“Basically if you’re not responsible with it, you’re ultimately advertising the things that you received, so that can be very attractive to people who are looking maybe to break into your home and steal those items,” Undersheriff Bill Schrom of the Chemung County Sheriff’s Office, said.
The Undersheriff recommended to either rip or cut those boxes up or potentially burn them if it’s legal to do so in the area.
The same concern with porch thefts prior to Christmas is still a concern after the holiday because of packages that arrive later.
The Sheriff’s Office is looking to keep the public and their belongings safe as the holiday season continues.
