President Donald Trump has issued a disaster declaration for Chemung, Schuyler and Tioga Counties on Tuesday.
The declaration is for flooding between August 13 through the 15th.
Our region will be getting FEMA assistance and saw $36 million in damages.
New York Assemblyman Phil Palmesano said the federal government will provide $27 million in relief, that’s 75 percent of the $36 million.
He says it’s up to New York State now to make the next move.
“There’s a precedent where the state has picked up the local share so that burden wouldn’t fall on those local municipalities because they quite simply can’t afford it,” Palmesano said. “They were devastated and the property tax payers can’t afford it.”
The federal money will be earmarked for infrastructure repairs such as roads and other public projects.
There is no date as to when this money will be granted.
