The state is one step closer to allowing sports betting in upstate New York casinos. This comes after the state’s gaming commission approved regulations on Monday that will permit wagers for four casinos in upstate New York. Those casinos include:
- Tioga Downs, Southern Tier
- Del Lago Resort and Casino, Finger Lakes
- Resorts World Catskills, Monticello
- Rivers Casino and Resort, Schenectady
The commission’s approval comes more than a year after the U.S. Supreme Court lifted a federal sports-betting ban and after New Jersey lured some New York gamblers after it quickly adopted a sports-betting law last year.
The new legislation would require casinos to apply for a sports wagering license, as well as have a dedicated area for sports betting, separate from their other gambling options.
There is also, room for expansion, as casinos hope to eventually offer online betting and potentially expand sports betting to off-track betting operations and racetracks with video-lottery terminals.
The approval of the rules sets the casinos on a path to likely getting the sports-betting licenses sometime this summer, which is just in time for the biggest wagering period of the year when the NFL starts in September.
As far a mobile betting is concerned, ut it is uncertain whether lawmakers can strike a deal before the legislative session ends June 19.
