Staying safe around ticks

Local News

Ticks, an issue each year and earlier this week, New York announced it’s increasing the number of automatic deer feeders that treat deer as they eat. But deer aren’t the only concern when it comes to carriers of ticks.

“So mice are the most mobile, mice and chipmunks are the like the mobile, so ticks will stick onto the mice and the chipmunks and then they’ll come into your house,” says Brianna Riespeck, Curator at Tanglewood Nature Center, “they’ll come around your house, they’ll drop off the newly engorged ticks and then they’ll have babies around the area so controlling mice is like the ideal situation.”

Experts say the best protection from ticks is to use deet-based bug repellant anytime you plan on spending time outdoors.
