Elmira City Council workshop meeting announces plans to adopt 2016 city budget.
During a city council workshop Thursday, February 18, council announced it plans to take action to adopt the budget during Monday night’s meeting.
The budget currently totals nearly $33 million dollars.
The tax rate increase of about 5.5% would have an impact of about $57 dollars for a home valued at $50,000.
City Manager, Kim Middaugh said raising taxes isn’t easy for anyone, but it’s something that needs to be done.
“I don’t think anyone is satisfied to have to increase taxes,” said Middaugh. “I think there’s already a heavy burden on our residents and we need to do more to reduce that burden but we are going through some very difficult financial times and we are trying to also come up with other solutions.”
