The New York Department of Homeland Security hosts fireworks demonstration

New York state fire safety officials demonstrate the importance of using fireworks safely.

The New York Department of Homeland Security hosted a demonstration on the dangers of fireworks in Guilderland.

This comes just one week before the fourth of July. The consumer product safety commission released a list of most injured body parts while using fireworks, with hands and fingers coming in at the top of the list.

Items like sparklers can create permanent damage to those areas. More than 50% of the injuries consist of burns.

Officials say if used properly, more people can spend time celebrating independence day — than sitting in an emergency room.
